George H. Dawes wrote the following for the Pittsville (Wisconsin) Record, 2 April 1931:

The person who has never lived in a pioneer country knows very little of the real joys of living. They certainly have missed much of the real spice of life.

There were hardships to endure, many privations to meet, but men and women of those days had the courage and stamina to go through with that kind of life.

The writer remembers when nearly all of Wisconsin north of the Fox River was pioneer country. I remember when the farmers near Plainfield hauled their wheat with ox teams to Berlin to sell. And there are people yet living who remember when the farmers around Berlin and Ripon hauled their wheat to Milwaukee, a distance of 90 miles, with ox teams to get a market.

Hardships, of course, but the love of home was deeper, more intense, then than now. There was a thrill in going into the wilderness and carving out a farm. Few of the younger people of today can realize what pioneer life meant at the time when people settled in the unbroken woods miles from railroads and markets. But every family wanted a home of its own and that was the only way homes could be had by men without money - get homesteads or other very cheap lands.

By 1875, Waushara County had practically passed through the pioneer stage, so my father sold his farm and moved to Wood County. He located about three miles northeast of Pittsville. At that time there was quite an exodus from Waushara County, and Wood County, with the locality around Pittsville as their object. Along with my father, there was my brother Joseph, who has now lain in the old cemetery at Pittsville for fifty years, my brother-in-law, M. J. Armon,Charlie Dawes and several others.

At the time I was working on the farm near Brandon and when the season's work was finished, I of course followed in the wake of the immigrants from Waushara.

At that time there was no lawyers, and therefore, no lawsuits. There were no doctors, and therefore, very little sickness and fewer deaths. When I first saw Pittsville, if my memory serves me right, there were only two graves in the old cemetery.

There was no church, and consequently, no church dissensions, but the people had their practical religion of "loving their neighbors as themselves."

My father, who has rested in the cemetery at Pittsville for more than 39 years, was the first minister to locate there. But he was a sinner's preacher. He had no creed nor any place of torment to frighten the wayward to repentance. With him the kingdom of heaven was within you.38
