Historical Narrative by Richard M. Dawes:

John Roy Dawes was born 3 January 1819 in Seneca County, New York. The family home was about two miles east of Lyons at a place later to be known as Lock Berlin, when the Erie Canal was constructed through that area. Later, in 1823, this area would be included in Wayne County.

On 2 July 1823, John (usually called Roy to distinguish himself from his father), together with his four older brothers, Adran, Jeremiah, Samuel, Francis; and his younger brother, George, bought from their father for $380, a 50 acre tract of land in the town of Galen, Wayne County. How these children came by this amount of money is not known, but Richard Marion Dawes speculates that it came either from their mother or someone in her family who had died. By buying this land from their father, they enabled him to use this money to the family's advantage. When they reached the age of twenty-one, Adran and Jeremiah sold their shares back to John W. Dawes, but no record has been found as to the younger sons' portion.

About 1835, John W. Dawes and family, except for son Francis, moved from New York to Mercer County, Pennsylvania, settling in a hamlet named Transfer in Pymatuning Township, located about eight or nine miles north of Sharon. They lived there until about 1850, when most moved to Wisconsin. Transfer is very close to the Ohio line and the village of Orangeville is right on the line. At times, some of the family lived on the Ohio side between, Orangeville and Berghill, in Trumbull County. One son, Joseph, returned to Mercer County in the 1860s and family still remains there.

John Roy Dawes married Rachel Waldorf, daughter of Philip Waldorf and Rachel Fell, on 7 November 1839. Rachel Waldorf was born 30 May 1817. Her grandfather, Nathan Fell, was a prosperous farmer of Quaker ancestry. He acquired an estate of 2000 acres, and left to each of his children who grew up and married, 200 acres.

John Roy was a farmer but did not do well. Within five years of his marriage, four sons were born and John Roy was having difficulty paying his debts. His older brother Jeremiah sued him and obtained a judgment of $260. Jeremiah's administrative account (? probate) shows that John Roy had paid $58, apparently the physician's bill, funeral expense, legal fees, etc., and it was recorded that "there is yet a balance due on judgment in Daws vs. Daws but defendant is insolvent." This judgment helped protect the economic interests of Jeremiah's son, William P., who joined John Roy's household and remained, with his wife and children, a part of it until he died in the Civil War.

In 1850, John Roy Dawes with his family, parents and younger brothers, George, Joseph and Ananias, moved to Waushara County Wisconsin. The family's original intent was to move to Kansas. Later George went to Iowa, Joseph returned to Pennsylvania, and Ananias went on to Kansas, leaving John Roy the only son of John W. Dawes to remain in Wisconsin.

The family of John W. Dawes had been members of the Presbyterian church in New York. In Pennsylvania, they had become Methodists for the most part. Shortly after arriving in Wisconsin, John Roy became a Baptist, and at the age of 35, a clergyman. He did not cease farming, however, and is listed as a farmer in the 1860 census. He owned $600 worth of real estate and $200 in personal property. Of note, the same census showed John Roy's nephew, William (Jeremiah's son), as owning $1000 in real estate and $350 in personal property, and William was listed as head of household, so he may have owned the house. Fourteen people were living there, including John W., age 76, and Elizabeth, age 73. All seven of John Roy's children, from 19 year old Flavius to three year old George were noted as attending school. The 1870 census has John Roy Dawes as a Baptist preacher.

On 3 February 1862, he bought his father's 80 acre farm for $150. It is described as follows: "The South half of the Northwest quarter of Section 32 of the said town of Leon, County of Waushara and State of Wisconsin."

At the age of 44, three weeks after the birth and death of her ninth child, Rachel died 7 January 1862. She is buried in Burr Oak Cemetery. On 25 October 1864, John Roy married Louisa Houghton Bates, daughter of William T. and Prudence Houghton, widow of Jarius Bates, Jr., who was killed in the Civil War.

It was as a kindly and gentle minister that John Roy Dawes was long remembered and revered. It was the era of great logging operations in that area of Wisconsin. He would go out on the streets of Pittsville and endeavor to remind the rough lumberjacks of the Christian duty of loving their fellow man. Breaking up their fights, he would admonish an obstreperous combatant, "Now sit thee down and possess thy soul in peace!" Most of John Roy's children did not follow his example of participating in an organized form of religion. An exception was Mary, who early in life became a Seventh Day Adventist. Her husband followed suit and they raised their children in that faith. Late in their lives, William Adrian and Charles, with their wives and nearly all their children, became Roman Catholic.38

On 7 November 1839 when John Roy was 20, he first married Rachel WALDORF, daughter of Philip WALDORF & Rachel FELL.38,39 Born on 30 May 1817.36 Rachel died on 7 January 1862; she was 44.37,39 Buried in 1862 in Burr Oak Cemetery, WI.37
