G'day all,
I'm John Dawes from Melbourne, Australia, and I've been delving
into the family history for some time now. My father (Herbert Charles) was born in Gayton,
Norfolk, England, and he migrated with his parents (Frederick and Hannah) and his siblings
to Melbourne just before the outbreak of World War 1.
I'm organising a Dawes family reunion here on 18 March next and
I've been busy trying to update the Dawes family tree. In the last couple of days I've
downloaded the 1851 and 1881 Norfolk censuses from the LDS CDs, from my local genealogy
society, and been sifting through the data trying to extrapolate the details of the
ancestors. Do you find that the BD&M and census records constantly flip between 'Daws'
and 'Dawes'? Either spelling goes it seems! The other confusing thing is the
small choice of first names they chose for their children! How many William,
Charles, Benjamin, Francis, Jane, Sarah, Mary Ann, Ann Daw(e)s have you
seen? In roughly the same location!? How confusing is it then for later
generations of researchers?
To Amy Dawes near Stratford Upon Avon in
Warwickshire, did any of your Daw(e)s come from East Anglia? There's a few Francises in my
tree. And do you know where any of yours went in Australia? At this stage I don't have any
records of mine from Warwickshire. My daughter Karla is also about your age (16) and she's
getting interested in the family history, too (her grandfather on her Mum's side was
Dutch).
Kind regards from another Dawes (John William).
